What is MRP in manufacturing?

What to make, with which materials, and when?

MRP (Material Requirements Planning) is a planning method that calculates which materials are needed, in what quantity and when, based on sales orders and forecasts. MRP II and ERP add capacity, cost and finance to this calculation.

The Eruca ERP Production and Planning module is built on multi-level bills of materials and routings. When an order comes in, net material requirements are calculated by subtracting stock and open orders, and purchase suggestions are created for shortages. Work orders are scheduled according to work center capacity; material issues, scrap, quality control and finished goods receipts are recorded from the shop floor in real time. Actual cost is calculated from materials, labor and overhead and posted to accounting.

What it brings to your production
  • Material shortages are visible before production starts.
  • Delivery dates are realistic, based on capacity.
  • Scrap and quality losses are measured and reduced.
  • True cost is known per product.
  • Shop floor status is monitored in real time on the management screen.
Features

What's in the production and planning module?

01

Bill of materials

Multi-level BOMs, alternative materials and versions.

02

Routings and work centers

Operation sequences, durations and work center capacities.

03

Work orders

Make-to-order or make-to-stock; material issue and finished goods receipt.

04

Material requirements planning

Net requirements based on orders and stock, with purchase suggestions.

05

Scrap and quality

Scrap recording per operation, plus quality control steps.

06

Production costing

Actual cost calculation from materials, labor and overhead.

07

Capacity planning

Work center load and bottlenecks on a calendar; work orders are rescheduled with drag and drop.

08

Subcontract manufacturing

Tracking of materials sent to subcontractors, returned finished goods and subcontracting cost.

Process flow

End to end, in a single flow.

Each step inherits the previous step's data; nothing is entered twice, and every transition is logged.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Production and Planning

What is the difference between MRP and ERP?

MRP only calculates material requirements: what is needed, how much and when. ERP includes MRP and unifies all business processes, such as sales, procurement, inventory, accounting and human resources, in a single system.

How do you build a bill of materials (recipe)?

The semi-finished goods and raw materials that make up the finished product are defined level by level, with their quantities. Eruca ERP also stores alternative materials and BOM versions; changes are saved as a new version.

What is capacity planning?

It is calculating how much work the work centers, meaning machines and crews, can handle in a given period and sequencing work orders accordingly. That way, the delivery date you give the customer is realistic.

How is production cost calculated?

Actual material consumption, labor time and overhead allocated to work centers are added up to find the true cost per work order, which is then compared with the standard cost.

What replaces paper work orders on the shop floor?

Operators start the work order from a shop floor screen or tablet and record material issues, scrap and completion. Barcode entries update production status in real time.
